What you lose when you die
Your cooler contents are gone, and any rod, reel or bait visible in your hands drops and is lost — but enchanted gear survives one death and lost tackle can return to the Pawn Shop.
Death in Voodoo Fishin' is expensive in a very specific way: the swamp keeps your catch, and it keeps the tackle you were holding when you went down. Nothing you bought is protected by default, but everything you own is recoverable in a sense — lost gear feeds the Pawn Shop, and one enchantment exists purely to save a single piece of tackle from exactly this fate.
What you lose when you die
| Item | On death | Can it come back |
|---|---|---|
| Fish in your cooler | Gone | No |
| Rod, reel or bait visible in your hands | Dropped in the world and permanently lost | Yes — it can appear in the Pawn Shop's trays |
| Tackle stowed away (not equipped) | Safe | — |
| Money, purchased gear, journal records | Safe | — |
| Session upgrades (cooler tier, Sprint, Jump, chum, club) | Reset when you leave the lobby | Re-earned through the next Dock Quota |
The rule is deliberately visible: if your pole is out, it can be lost. When you pick up a fish the game automatically unequips your rod, and if you are holding tackle when you die, the developers made those items drop into the world so you can see the loss happen rather than discover it later at the shop.
The three habits that save gear
- Stow before you walk. Crossing the swamp to a trader, climbing somewhere to reach a new spot, or poking around a monster's patrol route are all moments to put the rod away. The game stops auto-unequipping once you are no longer holding a fish, so this one is on you.
- Do the risky trip with a full cooler in mind. A 10-slot cooler full of rare fish is worth far more than the rod on your back. If something starts screaming in the reeds, cutting the line and running is almost always the correct trade.
- Check Dealin' Delores after a bad night. The Pawn Shop's inventory is built from the current session: tackle that players sold her shows up on the shelves, and tackle lost during that session makes its way into her trays. Lost gear is often purchasable again for cash.
Enchant a favourite and it survives once
The Rod & Reel Enchantment system added in July 2026 exists exactly for this problem. Take your best rod or reel to Auntie Brigitte, feed her pot the bait and junk her Recipe page asks for, and the enchantment acts as a one-time loss prevention: the piece survives the death that would otherwise have taken it. Because the effect is one-shot, spend it on the item you would genuinely hate to rebuy, not on whatever is equipped when you happen to visit. Her Boil only handles one player at a time, so in a crew you queue up.
What the session resets mean for your stash
New players often misread the reset: leaving a lobby wipes your quota upgrades — the bigger cooler, Sprint and Jump boosts, the Chum Bucket and the Fish Club — but it never touches your money or the tackle you bought with it. Another player's report on the Steam forums describes the same confusion after rejoining a friend's session. Treat the two buckets separately: money and gear are permanent, sessions are consumable.
If you are losing gear often enough to notice, the underlying problem is usually threat handling rather than the death penalty. The monsters and survival page lists which threats you can outrun, which ones you leave the area for, and the campfire trick that makes a fishing spot safe for eight minutes at a time.
