Bait rarity ceilings and tags

Quick answer

Bait rarity sets the highest rarity that can bite, tags decide whether a fish is interested, and enchanted bait ignores the ceiling entirely.

Bait in Voodoo Fishin' is a two-part question: how rare a fish is allowed to bite, and whether the fish is interested in this bait at all. Rarity is a ceiling — the bait's rarity tier sets the highest-rarity fish that can take it — while tags like Live Bait, Shiny and Smelly describe what the bait is, and each fish's journal entry shows which tags it cares about. Match more tags for better odds; you do not need a perfect match.

The reassuring part for new players is that higher rarity bait still catches lower rarity fish. Upgrading bait never costs you easy money — unlike upgrading a rod, which is all-or-nothing. The catch is the price, and the fact that big fish will happily eat an expensive lure on a rod that cannot land them.

Tags: the other half of the bait question

Tags describe what a bait is and how it behaves, and the journal's per-fish page shows the tags that species prefers as icons. The developer-written Journal guide uses a bounty fish — the Salty Lake Stalker — as the worked example: the fish likes Pelagic and Top depth, and it wants bait tags such as Rhythmic and Reflective. The same guide is clear that matching is a sliding scale: the more tags you match, the better your chance to hook the fish, and a single match is better than nothing.

Practical takeaway: when a specific fish is your target, open its journal page, write down its depth and its two or three tags, and pick the bait that overlaps the most. When the target is just money, use whatever common bait your crew has in bulk and keep the good stuff for the trip where you have a bounty to fill.

Special and enchanted bait

Enchanted bait ignores the normal rarity ceiling entirely and only catches what it was tuned for — powerful, and the only way to reach Voodoo-tier fish. Voodoo bait requires a visit to Auntie Brigitte, whose recipe page inside the game lists every combination she accepts.

Baits and lures that players have posted about, with the caveat that some recipes changed when 1.0 added new junk:

  • Lil' Sparky — an enchanted bait that repels nearby monsters while equipped, and becomes an Enchanted Campfire when cast.
  • Voodoo Doll — a bait tied to the enchantment system; it and Lil' Sparky were patched together after a bug that spawned broken enchanted versions.
  • Buzz Nipper and boot combinations — player reports describe these as attracting only the rarest fish until a Voodoo fish takes them.
  • Rubber Ducky — similar idea, rare fish until one is hooked.
  • Bald Eagle Feet — reported as attracting only legendary fish.
  • Little Snappy plus Trike — the junk-farming combination players use when they want crates and trash rather than fish.

The 1.0 update widened the bait shelf with Cheeses, Peppers, Tea Bags, Twinkies, Beignets and the Hanging Jar, which is a strong hint that tags and rarity ceilings are where the interesting choices live rather than in the fish themselves. If a spot is producing nothing on a bait that should work, change depth before you change bait — the reel page explains why that ordering saves the most bait.
