Map, compass and swamp areas
There is no map screen: the Compass names areas and reveals habitat tags, and players navigate by landmarks like the pier, the lake and the purple light.
Voodoo Fishin' does not have a map screen, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight: the developers' answer to repeated map requests was a Compass that names the area you walk into and reveals habitat tags, plus a toggle for players who would rather not see the area pop-ups at all. What follows is what the swamp's named places are and who lives there, gathered from official announcements and the directions players give each other.
The named places
| Place | What is there |
|---|---|
| Main dock / The Pier | Spawn point, outhouses, the Journal bookshelf, Fish Monger (Caesar), Tackle Shop, and the water players say produces uncommon variants |
| The lake | The big stretch of water between the main dock and places like Remy's raft |
| Fort Arbre | The second Fish Monger, Louis, with his own Quota meter and reward list |
| Rusty Remy's raft | The Junk Shop, described by players as on the opposite side of The Pier, across the big lake |
| Haunted forest | The way towards the enchantment area, past the ghost territory and the purple light |
| Auntie Brigitte's pot | Behind a portal-like structure in the dark; where bait, rod and reel enchantments happen |
| "Shut" areas | Sections of the swamp closed off with signs; the developers have said these will open and that the swamp keeps expanding |
That is the working map. A crew that knows "the raft is across the lake from the pier" and "the pot is past the purple light" can navigate most of what 1.0 contains without any UI at all.
How the Compass works
Explore and the Compass UI names each area you enter, which has a second purpose beyond navigation: it makes it possible to tell a friend where you found something. The Compass needle keeps your bearings, it can be called up on a controller at any time, and casting it into a fishing area reveals that spot's habitat tags. If you would rather just fish, the automatic area updates can be disabled in the Options menu and the Compass raised only when you need it.
Directions players actually give
Because there is no map, the community navigates by landmarks. Two examples worth knowing:
- Finding the junk trader: players ask "where is the junk trader?" and the answer that works is that Remy is on the opposite side of The Pier, across the big lake.
- Finding the enchanter: the route described in the recipes thread is to leave the spawn dock, cross toward the haunted forest past the ghost area, go straight past the purple light, climb the wooden planks and follow the path behind the dark hut to a portal-looking structure. It is dark enough that players warn about falling in the water, so bring a light and expect a swim.
Those are player-described routes rather than official markers, which is exactly the sort of thing 1.0's map requests were asking for — a "clearer water type visuals" pass was acknowledged by the developers and is still on their list.
Getting around the swamp efficiently
- Sell before you travel. The Traders spread across the map are worth a trip only if your cooler is full of fish, and dying en route costs you everything in it.
- Watch for monster territory on the route. The haunted forest stretch towards the enchanter is the same area where ghost-type threats patrol, so make the trip with your good rod stowed.
- Shops are safe zones. Enemies will not attack you inside a shop, which makes any counter a legitimate panic button when something is chasing you.
- Use the shut signs as a boundary marker. If you hit a sign, you have reached the edge of 1.0's playable swamp rather than a dead end you need to solve.
For what each counter sells and buys, the traders page has the full list, and the habitat page covers how to classify anonymous water when you are somewhere with no landmark at all.
